Welcome in the New Year with the best colours for luck
The last two years have been a strain for everyone and as a New Year dawns you may want to give someone a boost with roses of a colour with a special meaning.
Here are some suggestions:
White is associated with purity in many cultures and as such suggests purity, freshness and a new start.
In some cultures, particularly in Asia, red is the colour associated with good luck and also with the New Year.
If you want to wish someone better luck with money or more prosperity then purple is the colour to choose. In Ancient Rome, purple was associated with wealth and wearing it was strictly limited to wealthy people!
Finally, green. All plants come with some greenery so that makes it easy to include in a floral gift. Green traditionally means positive emotions and a decrease in anxiety, so if you know someone who has been particularly stressed fresh greenery will help them relax.
Cultivation tips for January
If you have received a Christmas gift of rose plants you can plant them in open weather.
So provided you can dig the soil you will be fine. If you are not quite ready then keep them in the parcel in a cool dark place like a garage or shed. Do not keep them in any form of Greenhouse.
Look at them every couple of weeks and if necessary re-dampen the root system. The sooner you can get them planted the better.
If you wish to order bare root roses and are not quite ready to plant; don’t put off ordering as some varieties are now sold out or low in stock,. Orders can be reserved for supply later. Bare rooted roses can be planted up to around end of March.
Continue to clear up your rose beds; gathering fallen leaves and do a winter wash with a mild solution of Jeyes Fluid to kill off black spot spores which can over winter.
